I should have also credited a contributor named Macrovector on Freepik for the images.
It's definitely better to use SVG files when you want overlapping items to remain clickable. A growing number of contributors on Freepik are sharing not only EPS or PNG, but also SVG, that you can even edit in PowerPoint.
That meant I could bash together this demo while waiting for a plane.
