Brainstorm a Wheel Of Life with Me

Mar 27, 2023

I have a new client who wants to create a wheel of life type of activity for her learners. (See attached image for 3 variations on what this usually looks like.) It is a coaching tool that helps you consider each area of your life in turn and assess what's off balance. There are typically 10 areas that you can rate. These vary, but are basically these:

  • Money & Finances
  • Career & Work
  • Health & Fitness
  • Fun & Recreation
  • Environment (home/work)
  • Community
  • Family & Friends
  • Partner & Love
  • Personal Growth & Learning
  • Spirituality

The wheel helps you to identify areas that need more attention. Here is a brief description of how it works:

She has been thus far told "nope, can't do that" in Storyline, and I have a hard time believing it's true. I was thinking of the dial function, but layering 10 dials on top of one another...one at a time...to create the entire picture. I am sure there are other ways. Do you have any other ideas? Have any of you seen this done or made something similar?

TIA!

Take a look at this story file. Let the audio run. I removed a lot of slides but, if you have each button on the left link to a set of slides, I think it will work for you. Look it over and let me know. I can help you set this up with any type of wheel.

The only thing I don't think can be done is the spider web graph on the bottom. That looks like it is generated in an Excel file.

Ok, you have perked my interest. So, if you turn the wheel to a subject, let's say friends. This would direct you to a set of slides. In these slides would be some choices. Each of these could be a variable or text entry.  On the final slide it would show the choices made for each category. 10 Categories would equal 10 mini classes with them totaling at the end.

Try this to create the graphic. For convenience, I included a slider to simulate changing the variable. For laziness, I only included part of one section, but I think you can get the principle.

I don't think I would want to get involved in a spider net. For any one category, each segment would have to account for the possibility of any one of ten different options on each side, or roughly a couple thousand possibilities. That's a lot of triggers and states. It would be cool-looking, though, if you wanted to do that much work.

We make tons of "wheels of life" for our coaching clients.
We don't map them together with lines; we do show the number and colors on the wheel for reference, and that seems to be fine for everyone. Pretty much like Walt said about all the states and triggers is right. You can totally do it from sliders on the first screen; that is what we do. On the slider screen, you would want to set the triggers to change the states. It means writing a lot of them!
