Branching Scenario not working as designed

Oct 20, 2021

Hi,

I'm creating a prototype branching scenario in Storyline. I'm using survey questions rather than quiz questions to navigate through the branches. However, I've found in a couple of cases that the branching is not working properly.

For example, when I click submit while on Slide 2.2, here are my triggers:

  • Submit S1Q2 (so it can be tracked in our LMS)
  • Jump to slide 2.4 if the state of Radio Button 1 = Selected
  • Jump to slide 2.3 if the state of Radio Button 2 = Selected

Instead, it's jumping to slide 2.3 regardless of which option I select.

When I click submit while on slide 2.21, here are my triggers:

  • Submit S1Q5
  • Jump to slide 2.23 if the state of Radio Button 1 = Selected
  • Jump to slide 2.2 if the state of Radio Button 2 = Selected

Instead, if I select either radio button, it goes to slide 2.22.

In the Story View as well as the scene view to the left of the design window, everything looks to be correct.

I've deleted and recreated the triggers but that didn't work. I've also tried it by creating my own button instead of the default one in the player. Has anyone else run across this or can anyone offer advice?

Thanks,

Mike

I created another test using a survey question (and just the top level this time), and it also seems to have a problem. It looks like the jump goes to the next numbered slide (i.e. from 2.1 to 2.2) rather than the slide I specify (i.e. from 2.1 to 2.4) when I click submit.

When I look at the story view, there are TWO arrows going from 2.1 to 2.2, one going to 2.3, and one going to 2.4. When I mouse over the arrows, I only get the tool tip on one of them.

I've also moved slides around in story view, which renumbers the slides. Whichever option I select, it ALWAYS goes to 2.2, regardless of content.

Hi Michael,

The issue is that the survey question has no feedback, so the Submit trigger just goes on to the next screen and your other triggers never fire.

I'm attaching a different version, where slide 2.2 is modified. In form view, I added feedback by question, which gives a new layer. I deleted all the objects on that layer so there is no real feedback to the user, set its layout to blank, and added two triggers there to do the conditional branching when the layer's timeline starts. Also eliminated the branching triggers on the base layer.

Hi, Michael.

Thank you for sharing the .story file!

The Submit interaction trigger will always jump to the next slide by default. If you remove the submit trigger from your slides, then the project should work as expected.

You mentioned you want to track the responses with an LMS, however, it doesn't look like you have a Results slide, which is necessary for tracking and reporting to work. Take a look at this tutorial by a fellow community member that might give you some ideas and insight on branching with a survey:
