The only other thing I'd add is if you add an entrance or exit animation to an object, those are triggered when the object enters the timeline and exits it. Thus you would move the object to a place on the timeline where you want it to appear and/or disappear.
You can also trigger those animations by changing the state. For example, set an initial state of the object to hidden and then at a certain point on the timeline, change the state to normal. That would trigger the entrance animation and not require you move the object to a specific point on the timeline.
