Creating a simulation of an iPad app

Aug 02, 2012

I need to build an e-learning course for an iPad application. I'm assuming to do this in Storyline, I'll have to do individual screen shots on the iPad, send them to my computer and manually build the hotspots/branching to simulate the clicks (which are actually taps on the iPad).

I'm wondering if anyone has done this in the past and if you have any suggestions on best practices, etc. on setting this up...

I'm trying to accomplish the same goal - an eLearning lesson for an iPad application. I can share my iPad screen with my PC (Surface with touchscreen) using Airplay/AirServer. I've attempted a screen recording with Storyline 360, but the try it mode didn't render individual slides for individual taps. Thinking if app was on my computer, SL360 would capture the screen taps on the Surface.  Has anyone else completed this type of interaction?

Hi Kim,

You're exactly right - since you're recording a screencast of something else, Storyline can't capture the clicks or taps on the iPad to convert them into a step by step screen recording.

I'm not sure what other folks have set up here in ELH, but I'll be curious to see what ideas are shared in this discussion.

Thanks for getting it going again!

Hi Ashley,

Is there any update on this? My requirement is the same. I need to do TRY MODE simulation of an ipad application. With Reflector 3 I was able to screen mirror but the clicks/taps are not recorded. So it throws me a blank screen.

Please let me know the best way to do this now?

Thanks.

Hello Arpitha and welcome to E-Learning Heroes :)

Thanks for contacting us to share that you would like to create a similar recording.

In order for the built-in Storyline screen recording tools to work, the content will need to be on the same computer that Storyline is installed on and will require mouse clicks.

Is there software that will allow you to mirror your device and use your mouse to maneuver? I look forward to hearing what others may be using for this as well.

Otherwise, you could build this manually by using screenshots and freeform questions to simulate the try mode for your learners.
