Disable "Enter" Key Stroke on Text Entry Question

Dec 21, 2022

Hi All,

I am working on a free form question interaction that is a text entry question.  I understand 256 characters are permitted in this type of interaction.  I noticed that if I hit the Enter key to advance to a new line within the text entry box, the "Thank you" layer pops up prematurely, before the interaction is submitted.  Is there a way to disable this?  I think learners may hit Enter to advance to a new line if they are typing.  We are not trying to track the response as correct/incorrect so I just chose a "Thank you" layer once the interaction is completed.  As I understand it, our LMS has the capability to see what people have typed--we don't need it graded.  Maybe I just have my question set up incorrectly.  If there is a better way to do this, I'm open to it.  Thank you!

Hello Jodi,

Thanks for reaching out!

There isn't a way to disable the 'Enter' key from submitting questions in Storyline 360, but some members of the community found a workaround which uses Javascript. You can check out their solution here

I’ll be happy to pass your thoughts on to our product team, but you can also feel free to detail them more through a feature request!

Can you please provide some details on what you're experiencing? If you're willing to share your file with our team, we'd be happy to take a closer look for further testing as well! You can upload it here or privately in a support case, and we'll delete it from our systems once troubleshooting is complete.
