Editing a Current Articulate Storyline

Dec 06, 2021

Hello,

I need to edit an Articulate course and need some assistance:

  • How can I determine what Articulate product was used to build the course. I am pretty sure that it was Storyline 360 but I need to make sure
  • What type of file do I use to edit an existing product .story?? What if I cannot locate that file. It should be in the output folder correct?
  • What is the best practice for uploading a video and where should that video reside? I would assume on the company's shared drive.
  • How do I update quiz questions in Articulate

Hi Cheryl,

Let me see if I can help on some of these.

#1: if you have access to the published output files, you can open the meta.xml file and find the build number of Storyline used to create the content. You can then check Articulate's support pages to determine more information:

https://articulate.com/support/article/Articulate-360-Desktop-App-Version-History

For example, Build 3.58.26627.0 is SL360 released on November 30, 2021

#2: To edit an existing Storyline project you will need access to the .story file which is not included in the published output.

#3:  Depends upon the size of the video but typically it's best to embed the video that is streaming from a website if possible. You can insert video from a website (using its embed code) or insert a video from  a file (this can increase your overall course size).

#4:  I'm assuming these are standard quiz questions and not custom designed ones.

To update quiz questions, you will need the .story master file and open it via the Storyline 360 app. Navigate to the quiz question you want to change and select Form View to make your modifications.

Hope that helps.

Cheryl,

It looks like you are looking at the published content. You won't be able to retrieve the .story master file from there.

FYI - Another way to find the version of Storyline used is to look at the story.html file in the published output folder. If you want to share it with me here, I can tell what version it was created in pretty easily.

I can imagine how frustrating that is. Hopefully, you find the .story file so you can make the changes you need and republish it.

Let me know if you need any additional clarification on anything we've discussed.

Good morning Cheryl.

What you are showing is the properties of the .story file. What you want to do is right click the story.html file, select Open with and choose Notepad. This will allow you to see the HTML code which includes the information regarding version:

<!doctype html>
<html lang="en-US">
<head>
<meta charset="utf-8">
<!-- Created using Storyline 360 - http://www.articulate.com -->
<!-- version: 3.58.26627.0 -->

In regard to recreating the content, there is no way to take the published output and convert it back into a .story master file.   If you can open and view the course, you could recreate it (from scratch) in Storyline.  You could also recover some of the assets used in the course from the story_content folder as a last resort (e.g., videos used, photos used, audio, etc).

Does that make sense?

Depending upon where the .story file is, you might be able to restore the computer, look at backups to find it, search the computer in question (*.story) for the files, check in the computer's %appdata%\Articulate\Storyline folder, etc. I'm assuming it was not created by an outside employee and if it was, you already reached out to them.

If you do find the master file in your %appdata%\Articulate\Storyline folder, it will have a .tmp extension. Try renaming it to the  .story extension and reopen in Storyline.
