Image state changes and the timeline

If I have an image with multiple states (eg: State1, State2, State3) and I want to start a slide with the image first appearing with State 2, if I use a trigger to change the state to State 2 when timeline starts, the image shows right at the beginning of the timeline and overrides any actual timeline placement I have set for it.

Is there a workaround for this?

Yes, there is a setting above the states called "Initial state". Just set that to State 2 and delete the trigger. Boom, done. :)

Similar but different issue here: I have 8 states which are 8 different characters the learner can select as their avatar for the lesson. The avatar variable is set to Change State Of <the character> When Timeline Begins on This Slide.

However, when I preview the project I always see the Initial State of the Character display for a fraction of a second before the variable does its thing and then displays the correct Character state for the remainder of the slide. It's like there is too long of a delay for the variable to read and change the state. Is there a method to avoid the initial state displaying on the screen?

See if you can hack this by displaying the avatar .5 seconds after the slide starts maybe with a quick fade in.
