Problem saving custom templates

May 22, 2023

I am trying to build a custom template for our agency based on an existing project. When I open and make changes to the .storytemplate file and then try to add a new slide from My Templates, I am still seeing the unedited versions of the templates I worked on.

Oddly (or maybe not) if I re-open the template and save it with a new filename and then try to add those slides, I see the updates for the newly named file (the original filename still shows the unedited version). I am just clicking the Save icon or Save As... after updating the template.

To recap: I can't seem to see the changes I make to a .storytemplate unless I give it a unique filename every time I save.

Am I doing something wrong when saving the template changes or is this expected behavior? Thanks!

Hi Jonathan,

Welcome to the E-Learning Heroes community!

I'm sorry to hear that you're running into this issue but I'm happy to help troubleshoot. First, I'd like to make sure I understand what you're seeing. It sounds like any edits made to your custom template will only stick if you save the template under a new file name.

  • Is this happening when you try to import the template into a new Storyline file and an existing project?
  • Are you seeing this issue with one specific template or multiple templates?

One thing to keep in mind is if you've already used the original template in a Storyline file, those files will not automatically update with the changes you made to the template. You'll need to re-import the edited slides for those changes to appear, which it sounds like you've tried.

I tested this out on my end by making a few changes to a custom template, and selecting File > Save As. I confirmed the file name was the same as the original template, and Storyline Template (*.storytemplate) was selected. When adding the template to a new or existing project, the changes I made were visible.

If you continue to see this issue across multiple files, you may want to try to repair Storyline. If this is isolated to one template or project, it would be helpful if we could take a closer look! You can get in touch with our Support Engineers here

Thank you for the response. Turns out it may have been an issue with the desktop application. When I restarted the app I was able to see the changes on the original custom template. I'm still making several edits to the template, so there will be more opportunities for me to keep my eye on this issue. I'll follow your suggested steps and contact support if it appears to be happening again.
