quiz slides random format change?

Dec 03, 2021

Hi, all! Something happened with a course I'm creating that I can't quite figure out. I'm sure it is something I did, but I'm trying to figure out what that is exactly so I don't do it again. (Articulate newbie here!)

I'm creating a 3 hour course that has multiple chapters. I'm creating each chapter in its own scene. When we started building the course we were planning to upload one SCORM file to our LMS, but since then we decided to upload each chapter as its own SCORM file to the LMS for some data tracking reasons. So since we made that change, I've been copying and pasting chapters that are in different states of readiness into new projects. Each chapter goes through several reviews (chapter author review, outside reviewer review, etc) so the file where I'm creating the first draft is called "working file" and then when it is shared with the chapter author it gets copied to the "author submitted" file and deleted from my working file, etc. Because the course is large, I found keeping all the versions I wasn't actively working on was making my working file run really slow.

I mention all that context to say that I've copied and pasted these chapters into several different projects at different points, which is where I'm thinking things went poorly?

I went to my file where the chapters with the most complete work done to them are and realized the quiz slide formatting is all wrong. The quiz question text box runs off the slide like a text box that has never been sized before. The text box has retained some of my edits though - font size and certain words bolded for example. Also, the feedback slides are wonky. I have made no edits to the slide masters in any of these files, so I'm not sure what's up. I think it is pretty easily fixable, so it more annoying that devastating. See the attached images for a picture of what it should look like and what some of them actually look like. Any idea why this happened so I don't do it again?

Thank you for the details of what you're experiencing, Sarah — happy to help solve this mystery!

I shared these details in a  support case I created on your behalf and sent a private upload link via email. Could I have you upload your file so our team can dig in deeper? As soon as we review your file, we'll reach out with our findings!

Based on the screenshots, here's my best guess:

  • For the text running off the screen, go to Format Shape > Text Box. Verify that the Wrap text checkbox is checked. (I swear that it sometimes unchecks itself...)

If that was the issue, you'll still need to adjust the width of the text box so it doesn't go off the slide.

  • As for the Feedback layer: it looks like it's got the "Blank" Feedback Layout applied. Try (re)applying the proper Correct or Incorrect layout instead.

And WHY did those issues occur? Gremlins!

Or, perhaps, slightly wonky software that gets "confused" now and then. In other words, there may be no way to completely avoid that sort of thing--especially when importing slides and working with extra-large files. So, if the support staff can find a real answer: great! Otherwise, it may just be something we all have to live with.

Judy is part right when she says "there may be no way to completely avoid that sort of thing--especially when importing slides and working with extra-large files" - there is no way to completely avoid that sort of thing.

But as I read your post, you are copying and pasting your slides, and c&p almost always messes up in SL. Importing slides almost always works. Even better, exit SL, copy the .story file, open the copy in SL, and delete the unneeded parts.

Thanks, everyone! I was worried it was gremlins...I can fix me, but I can't fix the gremlins! Thanks to Becca for opening a ticket for me - the fixes were pretty painless.

Also, Walt, I have started saving copies and deleting rather than copying and pasting. Thanks for that advice! I think it will go smoother because of that.
