I have previously made interactive software simulations by recording through Storyline, which has worked really well. Now I have been asked to do an interactive software simulation of a program that I do not have access too. Is it possible for the SMEs to make a screen recording and then send it to me to be uploaded to Storyline 360 in the form of a simulation and not just a video?
Unfortunately, converting a screen recording into Storyline Step-By-Step Slides is not possible. Storyline 360 needs to detect the inputs of the learner while the screen recording is taking place in order to properly generate each step in the slides.
As Joe noted, there isn't a way to import the video per se. However, what I'd do is extract the frames of the video. You won't need all of them since you get 30 fps. You just need the ones that you click on and the corresponding frame that results from the click.
Insert those images on slides and then use hotspots to create the interactions.
As a short cut, you could create a dummy screen recording to get the layers and what not. And then copy and paste those onto your image slides. That will save a lot of construction time.
Hi Tom this information looks helpful but the sound is intermittent mostly not there during this video tutorial. Any chance yo could fix the sound as I could really use this information.
how about their client buying storyline or using the free version to capture. Also what about using a remote service such as chrome and capture that way ?
I have only just realised that I need this! To produce software simulations. The bit where you can get the user to ‘try’ and then ‘test’ . I will need to complete and convert perhaps 10 x 3 min videos. Is it really as easy as it looks or is this going to send me crazy?
Storyline 360 makes it super easy to record your screen and convert the recording to 'Step-By-Step Slides'. You can check out this article to get started:
When you insert step-by-step slides in Storyline 360, you'll see this option to 'Show mouse cursor'. Disabling this option will remove the mouse from the inserted slides.
You can check this article for more information on the step-by-step feature.
You can record the screencast in Storyline and remove the mouse the way Joe shows.
Assuming you used a different program to record the video and you're bringing it into Storyline, removing the mouse depends on what application was used to initially record the screencast. Many of the programs will let you remove the mouse. If that's not available, what you need to do is extract the frames and manually cover up or remove the mouse. That should be pretty easy to do since the mouse isn't too big.

Hello Tanya,
Thanks for reaching out!

Let me know if you need anything else!

Here's a recording to show the basics. It's really not too hard to do. The main part is knowing what frames and triggers you need.

Weird that the audio went out. I'll record it again and post it today.
Excellent thank you.

Great demo too!

I have this questions too!
Tom, Great video! This is so timely for what I need! You mentioned in the video that there was a way to remove the mouse. How would I do that? Thanks!

Happy to help!
