Storyline Drag and Drop Icons are Difficult to Drag and Drop

Dec 28, 2022

I have a Storyline drag and drop that works just fine, except when you click on the icons/items to drag and drop them, you have to click an exact spot on the icon, for example, the tiny bit of the lower left corner. Otherwise, you can't "pick up" the object. It's not just my mouse or computer, others have the same issue. The icons/items are not "grouped", they are just single icons. Is there a way to enlarge the icon's interaction zone to cover the full icon?

Due to the content, I can't share the file in this forum.

I think I figured out the issue. So the icons that you drag and drop are black and white. I noticed that you must click directly on the black parts. Otherwise, you cannot select the item. Very strange. I think I could put a transparent box around the icon, group them, and then assign that group as the item to click, but I have read many posts saying that when you work with grouped items in a drag-and-drop, it frequently goes sideways. Any suggestions?

If you are using the icons that are available within SL, you'll notice they are actually already a set of "grouped" free form objects.

You could ungroup the icon, add in a rectangle the same colour as your background, or transparent at the back of the icon elements, regroup the elements/objects back into the icon and use it for your drag-and-drop.

1 group rather than 2 groups as you mention above.

If that doesn't work, copy the transparent box, edit the icon and paste the transparent shape into the Normal state. it becomes part of the object, without group problems. Some caveats: if you need to drag other states, paste the box into them. The transparent box cannot be created with no fill, it must have a fill with a very high transparency. There have been reports of 100% transparency not working, so set it to 98% or so.
