Storyline on 11gen Intel Processor with Iris Xe Graphics

Dec 10, 2021

I bought a new laptop this year and went for a high end with the newest everything. I have had 11 months of memory leak issues causing Storyline to crash which were eventually solved by an Iris Xe Graphics update, but this week I have started having issues with Storyline lagging. I have updated the graphics card, and done a Bios update, and made sure Storyline is up to date, but alas, still lagging. I put in yet another case with Articulate support, but their response does not make me feel terribly optimistic that it will be solved.

Is anyone else on an 11th Generation Intel Processor? How is Storyline working? I feel like, after a year of struggling, I either have to sell this laptop and buy one with a previous generation processor (I never had this problem with my previous laptop) or I need to let my Storyline license lapse when it is up for renewal in February and take my design work to a different product. (Adobe does not have these problems. *Shudder*)

I have an 11th gen i7 with Iris Xe graphic on a laptop with 16gb of ram that I bought late last year.  Previously I was running Storyline 3 on a 2016 macbook pro with Parallels VM. The performance on my Windows machine is worse because it is constantly crashing many times a day. While it did crash on my Mac it was not nearly as bad on the windows PC. This was likely because Parallels allows you to control how much RAM is consumed and so it didn't allow Storyline to get carried away.

I moved to Storyline 360 a week ago and the crashing is just as bad as SL3.

The only way to fix this is for Articulate support to allow us to generate debug dump log files that their software engineers can review to see exactly where the memory leaks are in their code. I have been in contact with their support team in the past and it does not appear that they have the ability or want to do this type of troubleshooting. Their focus is only on new features.

Apparently, this is a problem because Storyline is a 32-bit application, which means that it will not address all the memory we have on our fancy new computers. This will be a problem until they update to 64-bit. If you search through the forum, you will see complaints going back a few years.

I have decided not to renew my Storyline license and switch back to Adobe Captivate when my license expires next month. I will not willingly pay MORE for an antiquated piece of software that negatively impacts my day-to-day work life. Switching all my courses back to Captivate is going to be painful, but oh so worth it to actually be able to make sure of this fancy new laptop I bought. For the record, Captivate costs $39.99 a month and can be canceled at any time. Meaning it costs less than half what Storyline costs and we are not trapped in a one-year commitment. Captivate is not quite as user-friendly as Storyline, but it doesn't crash 10 times a day and lose our work constantly. Maybe if enough of us leave Storyline for Captivate, Articulate will finally decide to update the software we are paying a fortune for.

I was about to upgrade my old laptop to the Company HP model, and am stunned to hear about this issue. My Company has hundreds, if not thousands, of Articulate licenses. A solution must be identified immediately! This has been escalated internally and I will submit a ticket to Articulate that I hope will be escalated as well.

This is a MAJOR problem for me. Literally every time I work on my files, the save error issue emerges -- and I lose work. The "change thumbnail" temporary workaround that support has proposed also does not work. This problem has stopped me in my tracks from building modules in Storyline on my brand new, HP Zbook, simply because it has this certain GPU? People were citing this as an issue last year, and there is no permanent solution yet? Why not?

Hello!

Good news! Today, we just released Storyline 360 Update 68 (Build 3.68.28773.0) which included the fix for the bug where project files might not save due to low system memory on computers with Intel Iris Xe Graphics hardware.

Now all you need to do is update Storyline 360 in your Articulate 360 desktop app!
