Switching between layers on a slide

Nov 29, 2021

Hello! This question will probably be a breeze for anyone who knows Storyline, I'm just getting started practicing and am having trouble getting my layers/triggers to function together. I have made a slide with three buttons (numbered 1-3). The first time I made the buttons myself and then I tried just using the button feature to see if I had done something wrong with my custom buttons. I created 3 layers to go with the buttons and then created three object triggers to "show layer" when each buttons is pressed. It looks exactly like the tutorial that I've been following.

BUT when I preview the slide and then click on the buttons only the first button I click on comes up. It will not switch to the next button (and layer) that I click on. I thought that a "Show Layer" trigger would automatically hide the previous layer? I have ensured that the "Hide other slide layers" box is check on each of the slide layer properties.

Also, it seems to me that the button states are not functioning properly either. The first button I click on will not follow the states that I created for it. The second and third button I click on will follow the button states, but the corresponding layer will not show.

I'm sure I'm missing something very basic. I've looked through all the properties for the slide, layers, buttons, triggers, everything I can think of, but I haven't been able to solve the problem even after re-doing the exercise from scratch. I've attached the sample. Please help me figure out how to make this work! Thank you in advance for your help!

Hi, Leslie, and welcome to E-Learning Heroes! ✨

Thank you for sharing the .story file!

When you use layers, you don't need to duplicate the items/objects from the base layer, as they already show through (think of layers as transparent sheets you can draw on, which will go on top of your base layer).

I deleted the duplicated items from each of your layers, and your project now works. I am attaching it here so you can review it.

Let me know if you have additional questions.
