Timeline not previewing motion path correctly

Jun 06, 2023

Whenever I create any object with a motion path it no longer previews it in the timeline correctly. If I preview by playing the timeline, or by previewing the slide, it shows it no problem. It is just when I navigate by clicking on specific times during the timeline.

Hi Abril, and welcome to the E-Learning Heroes Community! So glad you're here! ✨

I understand that you’re not seeing any movement on the slide when selecting different parts on the timeline while editing. Animations (motion paths included!) won’t play unless you press the Play button on the timeline in Slide View, so what you’re noticing is expected when interacting with the timeline.

Here's a quick Peek to show you this in action!

Please let me know if you have any questions!

Hi Luciana! Thank you for the quick reply. My native language is not English, I believe I worded myself incorrectly. What I mean is that the preview is incorrect. It is not showing the object in the position that it should be when I navigate through the timeline. This makes adding highlights to objects with path motion content very challenging.
As you can see, this is what I see when I preview a specific point in the timeline:
Preview does not match real position.

It is not correct, even if I turn timeline visualization on and off again, it still shows the object with the path movement in a position that does not correspond the frame I'm previewing.

This is that exact same frame when I preview by playing the slide:

Correct preview

It shows the object in the correct location at the correct frame. This makes it so I have to play the timeline, look at where the ending animation lands, make a mental note of it, add the square highlight, and then play again to make sure I set it at the right spot.  Basically working blind. This has been an issue for me and my team for as long as I can remember. Is there a workaround for this?

Hi Abril,

Thanks for providing us with a detailed description of the behavior you're experiencing. This is one of those scenarios where we'll need to do actual testing in order to get a better idea of what's happening.

Would you be willing to share a copy of your project file here or in private by opening a support case so we can take run some tests using your project file? We'll delete it when we're done!

So the video that Luciana sent is exactly my issue. I understand that that is the way it is meant to react then, but it makes editing incredibly difficult and I believe it should be an issue to be worked on. It seems like something that was missed by the development team rather than just something "to be expected".

Hi, Abril!

Thanks for clarifying that Luciana's example is what you're experiencing. I appreciate you taking the time to share what you’d like to see in Storyline 360 as your feedback will help our team learn which features will be beneficial to our customers. You can also share this with our team in the form of a feature request. We’ll update this discussion if this feature makes it on our feature roadmap
