Free intuitive DarkRoom template
Aug 28, 2023
Hey everyone,
I've created an intuitive 'DarkRoom interaction' using Articulate Storyline, and I'm thrilled to share the source file with all of you in our community!
Here's a quick rundown of how it all comes together:
Step 1: Create a Background Image with Midjourney:
I started by crafting the perfect backdrop for this interactive DarkRoom using Midjourney. This tool allowed me to set the mood and ambiance just right.
Step 2: Add Items to the Image with Photoshop:
To bring life to our DarkRoom, I used Photoshop to insert items that represent different topics of the overall theme. Each item has a purpose and meaning that contributes to the overall experience.
Step 3: Create a Mask Image in Photoshop:
In Photoshop, I created a mask image that adds an extra layer of intrigue to the interaction. This mask enhances the user experience by allowing certain elements to be revealed in a dynamic and engaging way.
Step 4: Insert All the Items into Articulate Storyline:
Taking things into Articulate Storyline, I integrated all the elements (the background from Photoshop and the mask image) on a single slide.
Step 5: Play Around with Triggers and Layers in Articulate Storyline:
To make the interaction truly captivating, I played around with some hotspots, triggers and layers. This allowed me to create a learning experience where learners can explore, interact, and uncover valuable insights.

Hey Paul,
Thank you very much for sharing ! It's so ingenious !
Hey Paul, I love this and we are looking to use it for a project we have here. Are you able to tell me what version of Storyline this was made in. We run a few versions behind because of our IT Security requirements and Im trying to figure out if we could access the source file in our next drop or not.
Thanks Raïssa, when you have any questions about the template or need any assistance feel free to reach out!
I wish you an inspiring day ;)
Hi Chris, Thanks for reaching out. I have used the latest version of SL 360, but I'm sure (for 99%) that the interaction can be recreated in earlier versions. If not, feel free to reach out.
I wish you a great day ;)
Bravo pour l'astuce et merci beaucoup pour le partage.
Super cool example, Paul! That flashlight effect is such a bright idea. I'm going to have to dig into that more to see how you did it. Thanks so much for sharing the file and how you made it!
Your welcome Laurence,
Feel free to reach out if you need any help or assistance on modifying the template 😀
Have a wonderful day
Thanks Sarah. Feel free to upload the template to Articulates database if needed 😀
Wish you an inspiring day!
C'est juste superbe
What a great idea!
This is awesome, it took me a while to figure out how you did it. Which just makes it all the better as it was an entertaining lunch time puzzle.
This is absolutely genius. So impressed by the simplicity of how it works!
Lovely example, I like the idea and execution of this. Thanks for sharing. This is a lovely example. I appreciate the idea and how it was executed. Thank you for sharing it.
Thanks again Paul...Cheers!
Thank you, Paul!
I've checked the template and I understand how it is set up overall. But, when trying to recreate something similar, every time I drag the flashlight and let go, it goes back to the original placement (the one in the state). I'm not sure if I'm missing something!
Hi Kaouther,
I already responde to your question on LinkedIn about this issue, but in case you missed my answer or other SL users are having the same problems here is a short workaround...

Hi Paul,
I am new to instructional design and I am a beginner , I am struggling with the states and triggers , are there any tips you can give to a beginner ? I use you also used photoshop to make objects more appealing and interactive, my question is that does one have to have a foundation in illustrator to become a good instructional designer ?
Thanks for sharing this, Paul! It was of great use for the "Spotlight Masking Effects for Discovery Activities in E-Learning #447" challenge.
Hey Paul! This looks awesome! When I attempt to download the source file, I get a blank screen. Is it still available?
Hey Jarrod! This awesome download is also available over here in the downloads hub. You should be able to download it there.
