Accessibility issue - screen readers and feedback master

Hello, I am currently making a articulate course with storyline interactive videos in them.

I wanted to ask if there is any way the feeback master pop up gets read by a screen reader (NVDA)? It does not get picked up when the wrong data is enetered in the input of a texty entry and the pop-up for 'try again' comes up, and stays on the text box meaning the screen reader user will not be notified that the pop up has appeared, and pressing the down keys/shortcuts to go to the next readable element does not work and stays on the slide under the pop up or just moves on with the course to outside the frame of the storyline.

Please let me know if there are any ways to amend this issue.

Thank you!
Al Dee

  • Hi AL,

    Thanks for reaching out!

Generally, as long as slide elements are included in the focus order, they should be able to get picked up by the screen reader.

I'm not exactly sure that you mean by an interactive video, but I'll be glad to take a look at your project file to see what's going on. Would you be willing to share a copy of your project file here or in private by opening a support case for testing? We'll delete it when we're done testing!

Hi Joe, thanks for the reply.

I am wondering if there is a way to notify the user that a pop up has appeared. Which I think I just answered my own question as there is probably a function to add sound triggered by when the feedback becomes active?

But it would be great if it could come from the screen reader rather than having a pop up audio to notify that a pop up has appeared.

        Hello AL,

I did hear NVDA read "Main landmark clickable - Rectangle 4" for the feedback layer after I answered a question slide, but your idea to add sound to the feedback layer sounds good as well. Here's a link to our article on how to design courses to be more accessible in Storyline 360:

  • Hi AL,

The file that I used for testing is literally just a new project file containing a True/False slide with nothing else added to it. I've attached a copy for your reference.

And here's the version of NVDA that I used for testing.

Let me know if you need anything else!

    Hi Joe,

Thanks - I have checked it does work.
It does behave the correct way when it is the default. I will try to invesitagte my file more to see what is happening.

Thank you for your time to look into this.

    Hi again Joe,

I just realized the issue! I didn't realize there were layer properties where you can check 'prevent user from clicking on other layers/ pause timeline of base layer'.

I had imported the layer for the 'try again' and the properties were not switched for some reason. Thanks again for helping me figure this out.

  • Hi, AL DEE!

I'm so glad to hear that you solved the issue. If you run into any trouble moving forward, please let us know and we'll be happy to help! You can reach our team here or privately in a support case.
