Accessibility with dictation software (Dragon Naturally Speaking) - Documents uploaded to Resources tab cannot be opened with voice command

This affects courses made using Storyline 360.

Whenever I try to view/open a PDF document from the Resources tab while participating in a course using Dragon Naturally Speaking, I am unable to use a voice command to click the PDF button to open the document. I can use my voice to click the Resources button itself, but once the dropdown list of documents has opened, there is no specific button name I can tell Dragon to click.

I’ve tried using Dragon’s mouse grid command to select the area where the Resources dropdown opens, but when I use the mouse grid command, the dropdown goes away. This makes the Resources tab inaccessible to those who rely on dictation software to interact with online courses.

I believe Storyline would need better ARIA support for the Resources feature. Great ask/insight by the way on using DNS to open the world of learning. If you have a minute, I think Articulate's staff would point you to the feature request form.

  • Hi Daniella!

It sounds like you've hit a snag when trying to open documents from the Resources tab with speech recognition software. Sorry to hear that but I'd be happy to assist!

Testing the behavior on my end (Storyline 360 version 3.82.31354.0 via Windows Parallels on a Mac M1) I was able to successfully navigate to the Resources tab, and open a sample document using Apple Voice Control on a Mac.

I understand 'Dragon Naturally Speaking' is voice recognition software primarily used to convert speech into text, however, it can be used for some web page navigation as well.

To clarify, could you please share how a drop-down field on a webpage is accessed when using Dragon so we can report this behavior appropriately?

Looking forward to hearing from you!
