This isn't helpful for what you've lost, but one of the things I recommend to folks is using some type of synchronized backup. If you can do it, a Dropbox or Sugarsync account will really save your britches
I work directly from a Dropbox account and I've reverted files on several occasions. It's a huge lifesaver for those oops moments. "Doh" is the sound of enlightenment:P
