Can't Figure Out Why Trigger is Not Firing

I'm banging my head on the desk, I cannot figure out where i've gone wrong...

I have a narration on/off toggle button. On the first slide there is a bit of automatic audio telling the learner about it.

  • If they don't click the toggle button the VoiceOver variable = false.
  • If they click the toggle button once, the VoiceOver variable = true.
  • If they click the toggle button again, the VoiceOver variable = false again, and so forth.

The variable works (in the sample file, there's a reference shape to show the value for the variable).

On each slide and layer, there's this same toggle button with a trigger that either sets its state to "Narration On" or "Narration Off". On some base layers this fires ok, on the subsequent layers i cannot get it to fire.

I've tried:

  1. Having the initial state as Narration Off, setting the state to Normal if VoiceOver variable = true. Didn't work.
  2. Having the initial state as Hidden, setting the state to Normal if VoiceOver variable = true, else setting the state to Narration Off. Didn't work.
  3. Creating a Narration On state instead of using Normal. Trying both initial state versions (initial state being hidden or Narration Off). Didn't work.

I've been at this all morning and before i kill my whole day doing this, i thought i'd ask for help. Does anyone have any ideas?

We use Storyline 360 but we didn't get authorization for the AI version.

  • On your layers, the "when timeline starts" trigger is changing the state of the Marker on the base layer, not the Marker on the layer itself. Because every narration button is called "Marker", the two look identical in the trigger's object list, so it's an easy one to pick wrongly. On "Land Acknowledgement - Explanation", both the Narration On and the Else (Narration Off) parts point at the base layer's button. On "Explanation 2", the Narration On part points at the base layer but the Else points at the layer's own button. The three layers on Centralized Services have the same issue. The fix was 2 things;

    1. Rename each button in the timeline so they're unique, e.g. "Narration Btn Base", "Narration Btn Expl 1".
    2. On each layer, delete the timeline-start trigger and rebuild it: Change state of 'this layer's button' to Narration On, when the timeline starts on 'this layer', if VoiceOver = True. Else, change it to Narration Off.

    I changed a couple of other bits that weren't quite right too

    Thank you SO much! I realized i forgot to strip the TEST file down to just the Land Acknowledgement slides rather than sharing the whole thing, but i appreciate you looking through the other stuff as well and i'll review the other changes you made too. Thanks again! :)
