Stuart, attached is a demo using a dial instead of states, in case you want it to spin each time the slide appears.

Presumably, you don't want the user to rotate the dial manually. If that's the case, just draw a 99% transparent circle (with no border) over the dial. That will block any interaction with the dial.

Is it possible to have it rotate counter-clockwise? I tried changing the values in the '"Rotate gear 72 degrees" layer to minus values (-72, -144, -216, etc) but that didn't do the trick.

Certainly (see attached). Change the initial value on the Dial Tools > Design tab to 360, change Add to Subtract on the rotate layer, and reset the Dial1 variable to 360 on that layer if the value goes below 0.
