Does the Modern player pass accessibility requirements for color contrast?

Hi all,

I am working with the modern player and it seems as if the contrast between the grey (both non-visited and visited) does not pass the minimum 4:1 contrast ratio requirement for passing accessibility. Has anyone had experience getting the Modern player to pass accessibility testing?

  • Hi Susan,

Thanks so much for reaching out and letting us know what you're experiencing. We have it reported to our team and are keeping an eye on the need for additional color contrast in the Modern Player.

I'm really sorry that I can't say when this issue will be fixed, but you're in the right place to stay updated on the progress.

Hi Ren - Has this been addressed in the recent updates to 360? If it has not, do you have an ETA on the fix yet?

    Thanks!

  • Hello Leah!

We haven't released additional color theme options for the Modern Player in Storyline 360. Our team is still investigating this feature so when I have an update I'll report back to this discussion.

In the meantime, to comply with the WCAG color contrast criterion we recommend using the  Modern Player in the dark theme. Unfortunately, the light theme doesn't comply with the guidelines.

  • Can you clarify what adjustments need to be made to the text labels in the Dark Modern Theme to have the correct color contrast? They still look too dark unless you hover over them and I can't find a way to change the default text color.

  • Hello Jennifer!

I've shared your comments with our team since there isn't currently a way to customize the text color. Even with the Modern Player dark theme, it looks like there is a need for changing the text color to comply with current color contrast guidelines.

I'll report back to this discussion when I have an update on this feature.

  • Any news on this ? To meet WCAG 2.0 AA level contrast needs to be at 4.5:1 which is really not the case of the menu elements in the modern player. (In neither bright or dark player)

  • I have played around in the CSS file and was able to change the colors so the contrast is now AA compliant

  • Hello everyone,

With the release of Update 50, the modern player now meets WCAG accessibility guidelines for visual contrast and color so all learners can read the text, decipher the icons, perceive the controls, and navigate easily. Learn more about modern player accessible contrast.

Please note, we are currently on Build 3.53.25436.0.

The ability to customize the player colors is a feature that is still open with our team, but this conversation is attached so that we can share updates with you here.
