Hide Text Entry Instruction

Hi Articulate Users/Experts!

Id like to get your thoughts or advice if you can help me in recommending what can be a possible trigger/variable for a survey I am creating and it has a text entry question. We wanted the entry instruction if the scenario is:

1.) the learner has answered or entered a comment in the text entry field, the instruction will not pop-up again and;

2. If the learner clicked jumped to previous question slide (Question1) then click next which is back to the text entry question the answer will retain and the instruction will no longer appear.

Note:

1. Our main goal is to show the instruction layer only if there is no text entry and hide it if there is already an answer.

2. We did not use the default text entry instruction and made it a layer since we wanted to customize the color of the text instruction vs the text entry answer.
3. We did not use reset to initial state bec our intention is to save their answers even if they hit back.

I tried using condition adding it to 1) show layer if text entry value of blank (ignore case) but the instruction pops up even if they answered already. This is similar when I add it to hide layer. Would you be able to help? Thanks!

  • Hello Amallie,

    Happy to help!

    The behavior I'm seeing in your project file is that when I enter text in the 'Question 2' slide and navigate away from the slide, the 'Text Entry Instruction' layer no longer appears on the slide after returning. This appears different to your reported behavior of the instruction layer appearing even if the text entry field has already been populated. Here's a quick recording of my testing

    Since we appear to be getting different results, I'd like to ask a few questions to help clarify your experience:

    Looking forward to hearing from you!

    Hi Joe! Thanks for looking into this.

     I actually was able to figure it out already. Here's the latest version but feel free to explore if you have better recommendations.

    I placed a variable "ViewCount" Trigger and added the text entry if conditions so that the instruction layer will only appear when there's no text entry.
