How many questions do you need in a question bank so a second random drawing does not repeat a question?

I am working with a client who wants learners who take a test a second time and not to see any repeat questions in the second draw. How does Storyline 360 choose which questions to put in repeat draws from a bank? And how many questions do you need in the bank not to deliver a duplicate in the second draw?

  • Random is random. If you randomly draw from the same question bank a second time, there's no way to ensure that the program won't repeat a question shown in the first draw.

The only way to avoid repeats is to use separate question banks.

If you really want to go down the rabbit hole of "random" numbers and deterministic computing, you can start with this short post from 2011:

Can a Computer Generate a Truly Random Number?
It depends what you mean by random…

Or, as Judy said, just use separate question banks populated with different questions. 😉

Thank you, both. I intend to use separate question banks and it's helpful to know that's the best way to minimize duplicates.

  • Wonderful to hear, Diane! Thanks for sharing your knowledge Judy and Joseph!

    Happy developing! ✨
