How to restart the timeline with a trigger
Hi,
I want to use only custom made buttons, but now I have a problem with a timeline animation.
I made a pause button that shows a layer on which the base layer is paused and a play button on that layer. It works perfectly.
But I can not seem to make a trigger that resets the timeline for the baseslide. (just a restart button)
(going away from the slide and returning only results in resuming the timeline where it was)
Can anyone help me with a simple solution?
Thanks!

A slide can jump to itself, and will restart a lot of objects, but for some reason audio files don't seem to restart. Best practice for restarting audio files is to place a slide immediately preceding the slide with the audio. Make it look like the target slide so you don't have a visual disparity in the event there is a buffering glitch. Put a trigger on it to jump to the target slide when the timeline starts. It will usually make the jump seamlessly and invisibly. Set all triggers and jumps to go to that slide whenever you want the learner to go to the target slide. For instance, in Leslie's example you would jump to the slide before, rather than the slide with the audio.

Does the audio start right at the beginning of the timeline? I have found more reliable behavior by spacing the audio start in about a half a second. For some reason, adding this buffer tends to make things like timeline restarts and sync work better for audio starts.

Does anyone know if this "restart to initial state" works on layers as well as base layers? I'm attempting to use it on a layer but it doesn't seem to be working yet. I have a lot of small videos that serve as vignettes for the content on the base layer. And it would be nice to give the student that option to replay the content. I tend to customize my buttons as well because I don't like the look of the stock Articulate player. Clear as mud? Lol...
Even clearer! ;)
Hi, Isaac. You can set your layer properties to also reset to the initial state when revisiting. Are the videos not replaying from the beginning when you view the layer again? If you can send either some screenshots of your layer properties and trigger panels, or better yet, your .story file, I'm happy to lend a hand!

I'm facing a similar issue where the "Reset to Initial State" on the slide layers aren't working for me in Storyline 2.
I've even gone to the trouble and rebuilt the slide from scratch.
After testing it, it's because I had both "Hide Other Slide Layers" unchecked and the layer "Reset Layer to Initial State". "Hide Other Slide Layers" has to be checked for the "Reset Layer to Initial State" to work...which is annoying...
I'll try one of the earlier workarounds and see if that works for me.
Let us know if you still need help, Daniel. If so, it would be good to take a look at your .story file to see what you're trying to set up to have those two items enabled for each slide layer.

In a similar but different vein, i would like to put the UP (up arrow key) to replay a slide (any slide in the presentation). So I would like to put this in the top master slide. But there is no function such as "restart the timeline" and giving a "show slide" wont work because i want it to work on ANY slide and not define for each slide a variable.
What else can i do on the Master template ?
Thanks

Hey Philippe, I agree, that is exactly what I was trying to find when I came across this thread. A simple way for non-sighted users to replay each slide with the keyboard, having it programmed into the master slide. Is this possible?
Hi Alan,
It sounds like you're hoping for a "restart timeline" trigger? If having this ability is something that would improve your experience using Articulate you can submit a feature request here.
In the meantime, you could look at setting this up using a Jump to slide -> This slide trigger and you'd need to have the slide properties set to "Reset to initial state" to have items replayed.

I'm also experiencing frustration with the strange bug that doesn't allow a layer to function correctly if both "Hide slide layer when timeline finishes" is UNchecked AND "reset to initial state" is selected, resulting in the layer NOT resetting on revisit.
I submitted a feature request for a "reset timeline" trigger, but it would also be helpful if this glitch could be fixed. I'm using SL 360. - WaltHamiltonSuper Hero
Stephanie,
There has to be something that closes that layer, whether it is "Hide when timeline finishes", or another layer is shown that "Hides other layers", or a trigger to hide it. Otherwise, even if you go to another slide, when you return, it doesn't open; it is still open, so doesn't reset.

Hi, all.
In Storyline 360 / 360 x64, You can jump to cue/timeline with a trigger or when some event occurs, like timeline ends, se pictures:
