I'd like to insert a .gif to my project

If you go to Insert > Picture > Picture from file, you should be able to select the .gif file from your computer.

Are you getting an error when you try to insert the .gif?

I tried it in the way you described. But then the .gif is not working. Instead, it has been uploaded as a picture. 

In the Timeline it also says, 'Picture 1'. Is there maybe something I can do to activate the .gif?

Do you see any movement if you click Play on the timeline or you Preview the slide? See below:

I don't see any movement when previewing and/or clicking play on my timeline (I do see activity on my timeline when I hit 'play' but not my .gif animation. 

Could it have anything to do with the .gif format perhaps?

The maximum resolution for images files in Storyline 360 is 2,048 x 2,048, and the resolution of your GIF file is 7314 x 1080. As a troubleshooting step, can you try reducing the size of your GIF file to meet the image requirements of Storyline 360 to see if this helps?
