Interactive Video within a Rise Course?

First off, let me say that I absolutely love the interactive video feature of Frontline. My organization has basically been building these manually in Storyline using a combination of slides and triggers, and this is so much easier!

While 90% of course might comprise the interactive video, we would still need to have some front matter and summary slides to bookend the course.

Although the URL seems to indicate that I working in the Rise authoring environment, an interactive video lacks the ability to add the full gamut of Rise content lessons and content blocks.

I'm wondering whether you have any guidance on how to incorporate an interactive video into a larger Rise course. Thanks!

  • It's something I think we can plan for but isn't currently available.

On adding these formats into existing courses, you're echoing a lot of what others have said in this thread, and as mentioned above, that's something the team is actively planning to bring to both Interactive Video and Scenario. [src]

Building on Andrew's answer — until native support lands, there's a workable bridge: if the interactive video gives you a published or shareable link, you can pull it back into a regular Rise course with the multimedia embed block, then put your front matter in intro lessons and your summary in an outro lesson. Learners get the full bookended experience in one course.

Three caveats to bake in before you commit:

    - Completion reporting won't flow through the embed. Your LMS will track the Rise course, not what's happening inside the video — so decide up front what 'done' means for your reporting.

    - Set the embed block's height deliberately and test on a phone. Embedded interactives can letterbox or overflow on small screens.

    - Keep the video's navigation self-contained. The Rise lesson nav lives outside the embed, so don't put 'next lesson' buttons inside the video.

Not as clean as native support will be, but it gets the course in front of learners now.

We have done exactly what Ronald described, and managed to pull the new content types into a Rise course using an Embed block.

While it technically "worked" the result was completely unusable from learner UX and UI perspectives. Yes, we tried several different embed code settings, e.g. changed the height, etc.

While the Interactive videos are extremely useful to us, until they are available as native Rise blocks, we will be unable to use them.

Karl, thank you for actually testing this — that's worth more than a dozen theories. "Technically works but unusable for learners" is an important distinction, and it confirms the embed bridge has a real ceiling. What specifically broke on the UX side? Was it scaling on smaller screens, the interactive controls not fitting the embed frame, or the interactive elements not responding properly inside Rise? Knowing which part failed would help everyone calibrate whether any embed settings can salvage it or whether it's a hard wait for native blocks.

  • Hi Greg_Edwards_TH, thanks for the kind words on Interactive Video, and this is a genuinely good use case, wanting real front matter and a proper summary around it rather than treating the interactive video as the entire course.

Good news, AndrewBlemings-'s right on this one. Bringing Interactive Video and Scenario into regular Rise courses as blocks is something our product team has confirmed is planned. I don't have a specific date to share, but it's confirmed and on the way.

Thanks also to ronald-hicks, and KarlMuller for jumping in here, it genuinely helps us understand where the real gaps are in the meantime.
