Keyboard shortcut functionality

Hello!

I'm quite familiar with the keyboard shortcuts that are included with Microsoft Office programs, and I've found that many of them carry over to Storyline. I will also note that I have read the list of shortcuts that are published on this website. What I can't seem to figure out is why I am forced to click "Align" instead of just the letter a, but once I click that I am able to type in the letter that is underlined for any of the corresponding alignments I'd like to choose. If anyone is able to tell me how to correct this or a different way to input the command on my keyboard to avoid using my mouse, I would greatly appreciate the info!
