Loading Hyperlinks from External file

I would have assumed this has been asked before but after searching and searching, I haven't been able to find the exact scenario or a scenario close enough for me to achieve what one of my clients has asked us to do.

They would like to have some hyperlinks present in their courses but worry about links changing over time and not wanting the overhead of going back into the course, updating the links and then reexporting. So I thought if we put all of the links into an external file (text or json), then they could just update the the external file and fix any broken links.  I have done this before in other software and trying to replicate it here.

If anyone knows of a discussion that covers it, could you please link me to that discussion and if not, is there any Gurus that have figured this out yet?

  • For one of my clients, the courses linked to PDFs on their SharePoint site. For tracking, the version date for each PDF was listed in the footer, but it was not added to the file name. That kept the URL from changing, even though the PDFs were updated regularly.

Another option would be if your client could host a web page on their intranet with the resource links. The course could link to that page, and the web page could be updated as needed.

Those were my backup plans and we are working on standing up a internal page for that.

  • Use a Google sheet or database entry with the links. Then they can be updated anytime.
