I'm embarrassed about the text boxes inside the captions, I didn't realise that you could type directly into them as the cursor doesn't show when opening captions.  That would have likely been that solution, but as you've pointed out, duplicating the objects may also have been causing trouble.  

And, thanks too for the quiz jumping to the second slide - sometimes these little hiccups aren't super important but frustrating to solve!
