Need efficient way to advance through slide timeline with keyboard or screen reader

When using the keyboard and screen reader to go through a Storyline course, there is no easy way to advance in chunks through a slide's seekbar. I can press the right arrow or left arrow (or PageUp or PageDown keys, which do the same thing) but it only advances or rewinds by about 1 second. So if I want to move to minute 1:00, I'd have to hit the key about 50 times in a row. This is a terrible user experience for any keyboard user trying to skim through a slide. The Home and End keys take you to the very start or end of the slide, but if the slide is of any appreciable length, it its an ordeal to try to jump to somewhere in the middle of the timeline.

Would want the PageUp or PageDown keys to advance at least 10 sec, and/or perhaps give different sized jumps for holding down CTRL or SHIFT when pressing the right/left arrow keys or PageUp/PageDown keys.

  • Hi DLearning,

Thanks for the feedback on the type of functionality you'd like to see in Storyline.

At the moment, Storyline does not support a way to customize how far the seekbar advances when using keyboard navigation. I understand that larger keyboard seek increments or modifier-key shortcuts can improve the experience for accessibility-focused users.

I've submitted this request directly to our product team, and we'll be sure to notify you if we release a future update that helps!

Suggestion: modify the "Jump to time/cue point" trigger so one can set a time of "+5" (or +%jumpIncrement%) seconds, or jump to %varName% where varName holds a time in a specified format. That would literally be the work of one day for one competent dev (and weeks to test and verify, of course).

Thank you. I hope the product team will prioritize this. Also, I agree with CarlFink1 - probably a default jump of around 5 sec would be more useful than 10 second jumps (which might be too big).

I heard from Support that it is possible to advance or rewind by a number of seconds. It's just not obvious how.

If you create a trigger that has the action "Jump to time/cue point" you can click on the word "time" and choose "forward/backward seconds", then enter a numeric value, where positive number move forward and negative numbers move backward.

So the feature exists. It's just very opaque to end-users. Thanks to Rafael in Support for explaining this to me.

(Who at Articulate decided that the font for the Trigger dialog-like panel thingy should be so tiny? Why can't it at least be easily changed to something readable without a struggle?)
