Pausing and Starting Timer with Narration with JavaScript

Hello:

I have a quick question for you about JavaScript and Storyline, but first, know that my knowledge of JavaScript is limited to what one could write on the side of a matchbook cover.

I have been doing some research but am not finding what I want to know, so maybe it's not possible?  Here's my challenge:
My manager (without speaking to me first) promised our client that I could create a timer to run in the corner of every slide will restart when the next button (new slide) is clicked.  I know Storyline already provides this.  The part I need to tease out is that this timer will stop when the learner pauses Storyline and start again when the learner clicks the play button in Storyline's player frame.

I was hoping to build triggers using the pause and play buttons in the Storyline player frame, but don't seem to have access to this with the selections provided.

I then thought I could use the pausing and playing of the timeline but have not come up with a working solution.

My question to you is if you think this is possible or am I just spinning my wheels?  If you know of a source I can use, please feel free to push me in the right direction.  I am happy to do the leg work and learn, but I would like to confirm it is possible through JavaScript as the provided triggers do not allow for it - that I can find.  There has to be code to access the player frame buttons or timeline pauses, right?

Thank you for your time and attention,

Say
