Question about background playback of Storyline 360 courses in Moodle
Hi!
In my organisation we are currently developing courses with Storyline 360 and publishing them in SCORM format within Moodle. We have encountered a specific situation:
When a learner opens a course unit in Moodle, the content plays without any issues as long as the Moodle browser tab remains active. However, if the learner switches to another tab (for example, to consult another website or watch a video), the course slide stops progressing until they return to the Moodle tab.
My questions are:
Is there any setting in Storyline 360 or within the SCORM package that allows slides to continue progressing even when the browser tab is not in the foreground?
Or is this a limitation of the Storyline HTML5 player and modern browsers?
I would greatly appreciate any insights, solutions or recommended best practices for this case, as it directly affects the user experience of our courses.
Thank you very much.

Hi ASCENSIOVAZQUEZ!
Happy to provide some insight on this!
Storyline 360 publishes courses in HTML5, and Slide progression relies on a JavaScript-driven timer. When a browser deprioritizes that tab, the timer does not advance, which is why Slides stop progressing until a learner returns to that tab.
This isn't a Moodle or SCORM package issue, but rather a browser and Storyline Player limitation as you mentioned. Unfortunately, no direct settings exist in Storyline 360 to force Slide timelines to continue while a tab is inactive.
I understand this may feel restrictive, and I've relayed your feedback to our product team. In the meantime, I'll open the floor to other Moodle LMS users who may be able to share alternative design suggestions with you!
