I tested your file and I'm not getting any or very minimal slowdown at all. When editing the triggers, it might take 5 seconds for the trigger wizard to appear. But, I wouldn't say that behavior is alarming. The only thing I can think of is it might be an issue with your computer. Maybe it's an old machine or slower processor speed?
I wish I had a better answer for you.
With that being said, I think your project is pretty cool. I haven't seen anything like this before.
