Embarrassing that it took this long to figure it out. The triggers I had to set the states to Selection were BEFORE the triggers I had which either hid or showed the convo buttons. As such they were all getting set back to Normal after being set to Selection.

Yup, triggers run in order. Sometimes, for troubleshooting, you simply need to visualize what is happening trigger by trigger.
