Setting a Default Text Box Broken

Thanks for the additional detail!

I tested this out on my end and found that when selecting Set as Default Text Box, only the color of the text box saves.

• One thing you can try is to use the format painter on the Home tab. If you click the Format Painter once, you can apply the formatting to one object. If you double-click, you'll enable the format painter to copy over to as many objects as necessary until you right-click to end it. 
• Another idea is to set the default text box on the Slide Master. Judy shares some insight on this, here.
