Storyline 360 Inconsistent Audio Levels

I have a Storyline project of many slides. Some slides have MP3 audio. Some slides have MP4s (including audio). Some slides have both MP3 and MP4 on the same slide. The files come from many sources. The source files are not normalized to each other outside of Storyline.  It is not practical for me to touch each file in each project with the Storyline editor nor to edit them all externally to set them to the same audio level.

Is there a way to normalize the audio for all of these using Storyline?

In the Publish settings, I enable the option to "Optimize audio volume". But that seems to ONLY apply to MP3 audio.  It does not seem to change audio in the MP4s.

If it matters, my final production destination is an LMS.

  • Hello IraRundell

Thanks for reaching out! I see that you've opened a support case. One of our talented Support Engineers will be in touch shortly via email. You're in excellent hands!

We'll continue the conversation over in your case.

Have a wonderful start to your day!

So far, the outcome of the case seems to be "You have to manually equalize the levels between MP3s and MP4s before importing to Storyline."

I am asking the support team to help me open a feature request.  In my opinion, it would be VERY helpful to have Storyline take care of the tedious things and free my time to focus on the creative things.

  • If you really want to level audio and video, you will need to use other software before importing the media into Storyline.

It's not as labor intensive as you might think, you drag all videos into the tool (I'm not sure if I'm allowed to name drop other non-authoring tools in here). You set a "LUFS" level for all of them (Loudness Units Full Scale, is a standard metric used to measure the perceived loudness of audio). And then you say "Run" which will convert all of them to the same perceived audio loudness in 10 seconds time. Then you import them into articulate and set "Compression" to "None" for each file, that way you are telling articulate to not do anything to your files.

Thanks, Bob.  I get that it's not difficult.  I just think it's something that Storyline natively support.

I'm told a feature request is entered.  The "solution" until then is to manually equalize audio levels between MP3s and MP4s before inserting into Storyline.  I REALLY hope this can be automated soon. This is a big detractor for me.
