Storyline and accessibility hiccups

Hi everyone,

I have recently published a storyline course and the content was checked through our web team. They found 2 accessibility issues that I am looking for guidance on.

1. The resume page is missing a heading level 1 identifier for the title.

From what I can see it is the title in the Player options. I do not see anywhere to insert the <h1>.

2. Can you define the multiple choice answers as a group (see https://www.w3.org/TR/WCAG20-TECHS/ARIA17 for more info)

I have set up my questions using the "insert freeform" button. I have also tested with the same result through inserting a quizzing slide from the add slides menu. I have attached an image of the error my web team sent me from the tool they use to assess accessibility.

Please let me know if anyone is able to provide suggestions or guidance.

Thank you!

  • Hi Paul,

Thanks for your response. The title that I am looking to associate with the <h1> is the title that is in the player. As far as I can see there is not drop down for font selection within the player (in that particular section anyways).

Hi Nicole, and thank you, Paul, for offering help here!

I've logged this with my team since it does look like the title on the resume prompt page should be labeled as <h1>.

I've also started the conversation with my team about defining the answer choices as a group. Was that suggested in an audit from your web team?

We'll keep you updated in this discussion! Thank you for sharing both of these flagged issues with us.

  • Hi Nicole,

Others will probably be more knowledgeable about the second question, but I just had the first issue myself. Next to the drop down menu for font selection is a text styles button. Use that feature to either choose the default heading one style, or create/modify a style where you can programmatically define the type of text (h1-4, normal text, etc.). Hope that helps!

    Best,

    Paul

  • Hi Lauren,

Thanks for your response. It was the web team that identified the issue (it was an alert) regarding the answer choices.

Are these things that will be logged as bugs? Or are these things that will have solutions sooner than a bug fix? Just asking so I can plan appropriately with my team.

    Thanks!

Good to know that the answer choices were included in the audit. I do not see a flagged issue with answer choices. Have you tried using a graded question like a Multiple Choice Question instead? Creating your own Freeform Question might not be recognized in an accessiblity audit.

The missing <h1> label on the title is logged as a bug. I don't have a specific timeline to share, but it is in the hands of our Engineering team. I'll be sure to share any updates with you in this discussion.

  • Hi Lauren,

I have tested using the graded question as well with the same result. I do have another project being sent for testing soon. It is constructed in much the same way. So I'll see if my web team finds the same issue or if my first project was an anomaly. Thanks!

  • Hi Nicole and Paul,

I have some great news to share. We just released another update for Storyline 360. In Update 68, we’ve included important fixes and new features.

One of the fixes we’ve included is:

Title on Restart/Resume Page needs <H1> Tag

To take advantage of this update, launch the Articulate 360 desktop app on your computer and click the Update button next to Storyline 360. You'll find our step-by-step instructions here.

Please let me know if you need additional help!
