I don't have a solution for automatically updating version numbers in URL file names.
I will share the solution that worked for one of my clients: We kept the file name the same, and put the updated version number within the file.
Yes, one had to open the file to see the version number. But the URL link stayed the same. That was a huge benefit, because the eLearning courses, as well as the actual software covered in the courses, linked to those help files.
