Text variable references instead of empty variable

I'm happy to chime in! I agree with Phil; it would be helpful to see the Storyline file to understand how the variables and triggers are set up so we can make better recommendations. Do you mind attaching your project to this discussion or privately in a support case? We'll delete it when we're done!
