Triggers: What am I missing?

EUREKA! After a few more hours of fiddling, I moved the answers for the hint question to layers, and changed the question button to 5 different versions of the button, stacked on top of each other. When the user clicks the question, it opens the corresponding layer, executes all the other triggers and hides the existing button.
I don't know why this didn't work with states of the question button, but it kept triggering extra things. At this point, after three days of fiddling, I don't care. IT WORKS!
