Try again layer not moving to Incorrect Layer after set amount of failed attempts

I have searched but did not see my particular example. I have a quiz slide set to 4 attempts. I have a try again layer that is set to go to the incorrect layer after 4 failed attempts. However, when I preview the slide it's allowing me to keep trying and never gets to the incorrect slide. I want it to eventually show on my results slide and review. Any ideas???

  • Have you added or edited any of the triggers?  The Try Again button on the Try Again Layer, should just be a Hide Layer Trigger.

  • I did based on what I have read online. I tried deleting all but the hide layer and that didn't work either. The first slide I created works fine. That's a multiple choice slide. However, the others are hotspot slides and that's where I'm getting into trouble. I think it may have something to do with resetting after each slide. Here are the triggers I have setup for the Try Again slide.

  • BettiSalmieri : You're doing way more work than you need to. And that's probably what's causing problems.

You can designate how many attempts to allow for a question slide.

When Attempts >1, Storyline automatically adds a "Try Again" layer. The "Try Again" button on that layer just has a trigger that closes the layer (like RonPrice mentioned).

The program will automatically show the "Try Again" layer when the user answers incorrectly but hasn't used up their attempts.

If the user reaches the attempt limit and still answers incorrectly, the program will automatically show the "Incorrect" layer.

In other words, you don't need to track attempts with a variable, nor add triggers for which layer to show. Just let Storyline do what it's programmed to do.

  • I have figured out where I went wrong. For the hotspot slides, I had the submit set to "by player button" instead of "On Click". I'm good there, however, for my results slide, when I go to review my quiz, it show the screen that are incorrect, but it doesn't show the correct choice. There is just a spinning icon showing where my last click was. Should it show the correct choice?

Make sure the Slide Properties for your question slides are set to "Automatically decide" when revisiting. With that setting, Storyline can do what it needs to do during a review or a retry.
