What's the advantage of svg images?

To add to what Steve said, if you're building graphics in PowerPoint you don't need to output as .svg, you can save in a number of image formats. However, if you use .PNG I'd scale the object up on the slide to as large as you get it and then save as PNG and you'll get a better quality image to work with.
