Updating existing published RISE course

Hello, I'm looking for some guidance on updating an existing RISE course that is hosted in Blackboard Classic. We want to update the course without losing the currrent gradebook results. What is the best way to go about this. Apologies as I am struggling to find the guidance on the RISE support pages.

We have some users that have finished and others part finsihed. Also, the course is based on completion and the two changes are simple text and url changes in the content.

Thanks for any advice.

Hey! I saw you were looking for a way to update your Rise course in Blackboard Classic without losing your current Grade Center results. It’s definitely a bit nerve-wracking since Classic can be picky, but the overwrite method is usually your best bet.

Here’s a quick breakdown of how to handle it:

Export the new version from Rise
Grab your updated SCORM zip from Rise 360. Just make sure you use the exact same SCORM version (e.g., 1.2 or 2004) and the same tracking settings you used for the original upload.

    • Quick Note on Tracking: Make sure your Reporting is set to Passed/Incomplete or Complete/Incomplete.

Blackboard Classic sometimes struggles to close an attempt if it's set to Passed/Failed, leaving students stuck with that In Progress blue clock icon.

    • The Handshake Issue: SCORM 1.2 has only one status slot. If it doesn't get a clear Passed or Completed signal, it defaults to In Progress indefinitely.

Using Passed/Incomplete ensures that as soon as they hit your tracking requirement (quiz or percentage), Rise sends a clear Passed signal that Blackboard can easily translate into a score.

    • Pro-tip: If you’re using SCORM 2004, this is less of an issue because it separates Completion (did they finish?) from Success (did they pass?), but for SCORM 1.2, Passed/Incomplete is the gold standard for avoiding gradebook headaches.

Overwrite the existing file in Blackboard
Instead of deleting the old module (which is what usually kills the grade column), go to the content area in Blackboard and find your current course.

Click the small dropdown arrow next to the title and hit Edit. Look for the SCORM File section, click Browse Local Files, and upload your new zip right there. Press Submit, and Blackboard should just swap the content while keeping the link to your existing grade column.

If the grades aren't syncing up...
If you see scores hanging in In Progress, you can try a manual nudge. Go to Course Management > Evaluation > Course Reports and run a SCORM report for that item. This usually forces Blackboard to check for the latest data.

In Progress issues with students specifically?
If students are already mid-attempt when you swap the file, things can get a little glitchy.

    • The Exit fix: Have the student return to the module, click through to the very end, and use the Exit/Submit button inside the Rise course interface.

    • The Instructor manual submit: If they still show as "In Progress" after finishing, you can click into their attempt in the Grade Center and select Submit on their behalf to finalize the score.

    I would do this prior:

    • Back up your grades first: It’s always a good idea to download a CSV of your Grade Center before you touch anything. It’s the ultimate safety net.

    • Don't delete the item: Whatever you do, don't delete the OG content item to start fresh.

In Classic, that's the fastest way to lose your grade history!

    • Bookmark resets: Just a heads-up that if you ever change the actual structure (like adding or removing lessons), students who are halfway through will likely lose their progress and have to start the module over, even if their old grade is still there.

    • Test in the sandbox: Upload the new zip to a test/sandbox course first, then use Student Preview mode to confirm the quiz and completion triggers are still firing correctly before you update the live course.

Hope this helps! This workflow is usually the most reliable way to keep your data intact.
