Six Different Foods, Many Different Names

View the Example

David's example comparing the size of Germany with different US states inspired this entry. I taught German for many years, and have always been fascinated by the different dialects. In this sample, you can see and hear different ways to say the names of six foods across the German-speaking world.

Great idea to compare the regional differences in food names! 😊 I know some Swabian terms—just to name a few: Brötchen → Weckle, Möhre → Gelbe Rübe oder Riebala, Feldsalat → Ackersalat oder Nüssle, Brathähnchen → Gockel oder Hähnle, Berliner → Fasnetsküchle, Frikadelle → Fleischküchle

Wow! I should have had you for a SME and given even more examples! Es ist doch erstaunlich, wie unterschiedlich die Woerter in verschiedenen Gegenden sind, oder?

  • This is very well done, Thaddaeus! This gives me some ideas for future projects.

Thank you, Jayashree! I'm glad you liked it. One issue I came up with though, is that I wanted to use the "grow" entrance animation for the items when they pop up on the map. For some reason, this caused an issue with the marker labels. It made it so the text in the label was floating outside of the label. When I removed the animation, it worked fine. If I had had more time, I likely would have just used objects with selected states for the markers instead of the built-in marker feature.
