"Free" Copilot Agent based translation using XLIFF files

I want to give all of you who have access to powerful agents (e.g. based on Opus 4.8) a heads up that AI translations using the XLIFF export/import are now possible.

What worked for me:

Using Copilot Studio I created a simple agent

  • Simple prompting on the task
  • Upload of the XLIFF documentation in PDF format (available on the internet)
  • Selection of model: Opus 4.8
  • Export of XLIFF 2.0 file from storyline and upload to the chat interface

The task takes only a few minutes.

I was able to import the XLIFF without issues into storyline. Everything worked and only basic reformatting was needed.

After a first run you can and should ask the agent to build a data dictionary which you can then add to the knowledge base. This will includes information regarding the XLIFF file structure, Do-not-translate information, tags & placeholders, terminology that should be consistent through translations. This can be adjusted by yourself and will be helpful for future translations.

This process is free to you if you already have a corporate MS Copilot Pro license.

Your results may vary but it is worth an experiment.
