FOMO for FIFA

Hop In! We have ground to cover!

The Jodi Prediction Market was convinced David would do a World Cup challenge this week. I was fully prepared to roll my eyes at the idea. Instead, I somehow caught World Cup fever.

Using a bunch of True/False variables, you get to decide who you want riding shotgun on your FIFA road trip across the USA: the Scots, the Germans, the Brits… or a Surprise? Your choice determines the trip you'll experience.

There is absolutely no learning value here whatsoever. Just questionable decisions, cultural observations, and a soundtrack courtesy of James Brown. I love road trips.

My inspiration came from all the social media posts from first-time visitors discovering America. I liked one video (FreddyLA7), and suddenly my feed became the FIFA Travel Channel.

A few observations:

  • Buc-ee's appears to be the single most-photographed attraction in the country. Sorry, Grand Canyon.
  • Bass Pro Shops has Europeans questioning everything they thought they knew about retail.
  • The Brits have encountered tornadoes in Illinois, heat and humidity in Tampa, and travel adventures worthy of Planes, Trains and Automobiles.
  • Germans have discovered Louisiana alligators and Ella Langley music. Quite the combination.
  • Lawrence, Kansas has apparently adopted the Algerian team.
  • Waffle House, Portillo's, Raising Cane's, and baby back ribs are creating international incidents.
  • Unlimited drink refills and cups full of ice are viewed as American sorcery.
  • Europeans are fascinated that Americans want detailed instructions about eggs. Over easy? Scrambled? Poached? We take breakfast very seriously.
  • Ram trucks and Hooters have transformed grown men into cowboys. The boys are having a moment.
  • Everyone is going home 10–20 pounds heavier, with fond memories and several conversations with their cardiologist and dietician.

⚠️ Warning: loud music, flashing road markers, and an alarming lack of quality assurance. I ran out of gas before checking the focus order, so there are probably enough accessibility issues to earn me a yellow card.

Have a great week, everyone!

Hey Larry--I see we have a Buccees now on 10 west of Phoenix. I have to go now, but as it is a holiday week I think I'll wait! Have a good one!

Yeah, I think the lines are dyeing down enough where it would be fun to go, and get some of those Buc-ee's Famous Beaver Nuggets :)

  • What a great concept, Jodi. The "Europeans discovering America" World Cup videos are some of the best feel-good content I've watched in ages. You found a perfect way to weave in variables for your interactive map/road tour.

And hang on because we have a World Cup challenge coming up this Friday. It's been 7 years since we last did one.

I hated that one 7 years ago, but this year I'm more up for it. Seeing all the fans is more fun than the game. What is super interesting to me now, as a recovering Brand Manager, is how all the companies are responding to the viral fan posts.  For example, FreddyLA7 posted he had too much stuff to take home and FedEx responded to his post with "Hey Freddy, I know a guy".

Some of it is a little too much, but it's fun. And I responded to Larry above, I just saw we have a Buccees open now on 10 just West of Phoenix. I'm driving through there this week so I'll be sure to wear my USA 250 shirt. :)

I think the only other recent viral story with vibes like this is Jonah the sad dog who sat like a good boy and didn't beg for a hotdog at the baseball game. The Marlins are honoring him now with a special day.
