CMI5 export in Rise: Pros & Cons

Feb 03, 2022

Hi there,

I would like to understand what is the benefit of exporting a Rise course in CMI5 instead of SCORM 1.2 since you are not allowed to add xAPI statement as it happens with the latest Storyline updates.

Hi Alessio! Great questions. As new standards develop, and as LMSs evolve to support them, it's always good to question why you'd consider using them!

  • SCORM 1.2 only reports one status to the LMS in terms of success and completion, and it's an aging standard. You get better reporting clarity from cmi5.
  • cmi5 sends full question and response text to the LMS, unlike SCORM 1.2.
  • cmi5 is built for LMSs and e-learning in general, which gives it an edge above xAPI which might need other integrations to function the way you need.
  • If your LMS supports it, cmi5 lets you change the mastery score for your content in the LMS! This means that you won't have to republish the course and upload a new version. This feature could be incredibly useful if you have different passing score requirements for different learner groups.

Of course, you'll want to make sure your LMS supports cmi5 content. If you want to learn more about cmi5 as compared to other standards, this website is a great place to start!
