'Function' Layers
Hey everyone,
I've been experimenting with a technique that's really helped me manage complex interactions in Storyline. I call them "function layers" - basically using layers (with no visual elements) to house groups of related events that can be triggered from anywhere.
For example, instead of duplicating the same events across multiple objects, I create layers like ()CheckCondition that handle the logic in one place. When I need to make changes, I only have to update one set of events instead of hunting through slides.
I wrote up my full experience in a blog post here: https://smartfirm.com/blog/storyline-reducing-interaction-complexity/
I'm curious:
- Has anyone else tried something similar?
- What techniques do you use to keep your Storyline events organized?
- Any other programming concepts you've applied to e-learning development?
Looking forward to hearing your thoughts!

Hi Ken,
I am not sure I have fully understood how yoiu do this, but the idea is pretty cool. You do have to copy these layers into every new slide, don't you?
Not being a programmer, I am not sure if I understand how you duplicate the (inter)actions on different slides, which have differently named assets (images, buttons, etc.) without renaming them in the commands...
