Screen Recording: better editing options for screen capture needed
When using a screen recording in a storyline project to teach some click and type procedure through step-by-step slides in try mode unfortunately very few editing options are available.
Absolutely needed enhancements:
- Cut away some portion of the recording in particular in the middle (only possible using workarounds like duplicating the slide and manually changing the first or last frame of that portion and editing the triggers for the slide - a very error prone process)
- Speed up (or slow down) portions of the recording. Sometimes you need to move slowly for a smooth mouse movement and professional user experience. This is however too slow for watching.
- Zooming in on the recording timeline when doing the action fine tuning for the screen capture. For long recordings you cannot move the start or end frame with the mouse anymore but have to use the next/previous frame buttons.
For heavier editings (in particular speeding up the video) we sometimes exported the video to Camtasia, edited it there and reimported it as a video on top of the screencast. However, the first 2 basic editing requirements come up so often in our daily work that Powerpoint, Camtasia recordings and iSpring for SCORM conversion are a real alternative for dealing quickly with this type of issues though it requires manual setting of hotspots.
Some better usability in Screen Cast editing (Try mode) would really help us here. They provide a very powerful tool for learning complex procedures by actually doing them in a guided way but creation and maintenance must become easier otherwise it is too expensive/requires too much time.
